問いかける階段

■ステートメント
京都市美術館は建物の再整備事業に伴い、今年の8月、前庭に展示していた高さ約11メートルの石造彫刻「空(くう)にかける階段88-2」を切断・撤去した。
分割した状態で保存するとのことだが、作家(富樫実 氏)のコンセプトは空にうねって立ち聳えていた姿こそではないだろうか。
美術館側にも作家を含む美術関係者側にも地域の人達にも言い分はあると思うが、お互いの主張が平行線のまま出された結論に釈然としない人も多い。
石柱2本で構成された作品は、各5等分、計10個に切断され保存するというが、間違いなく元の形に戻ることはないし、もうそれ自体作品でもない。
残骸をどういう形で保存するつもりなのかは知らないが、せめて階段という意味を残すのなら”段状"に展示しないかという”冗談”を京都市美術館別館で表現してみた。
さらに石造彫刻のタイトルの一部「空に」を「問い」に置き換え、京都市美術館の関係者を含む鑑賞者にそれを問いかけたい。

■Statement
As part of a building redevelopment project, the Kyoto City Museum of Art cut and removed its approximately 11-meter-tall stone sculpture, "Stairway to the Sky 88-2," which was displayed in the front garden, this August.
While it is said that the sculpture will be preserved in its divided state, surely the artist's (Minoru Togashi) concept was its appearance as a towering, winding structure reaching towards the sky.
The museum, the artist and other art professionals, and the local community all have their own arguments, but many are dissatisfied with the conclusion reached with all sides' claims remaining at odds.
The work, composed of two stone pillars, will be cut into five equal parts each, for a total of ten pieces, for preservation. However, it will undoubtedly never return to its original form, and it is no longer a work of art in itself.
I don't know how they plan to preserve the remnants, but if they want to at least retain the meaning of a staircase, why not display it in a "stepped" arrangement? I tried expressing this "joke" at the Kyoto City Museum of Art Annex.
Furthermore, I want to replace part of the title of the stone sculpture, "In the Sky," with "Question," and pose that question to the viewers, including those involved with the Kyoto City Museum of Art.
